Every sustainability comparison contains a hidden decision that almost nobody discusses: where the measurement starts, and where it stops. Move that boundary a few steps in either direction and the winner changes. That is not a technicality. It is arguably the most consequential choice in how Europe currently judges products, materials and packaging.
The tailpipe tells you almost nothing
Let’s look at an example we all know. For a long time, the headline measure of a car’s environmental performance was what came out of the exhaust. Zero at the tailpipe became shorthand for zero, full stop. It is a true statement about the moment of driving, but an incomplete one about the vehicle.
The response was to widen the frame. Well to wheel adds the fuel pathway: extraction, refining, transport, and in the case of electricity, generation. Cradle to grave widens it again, to materials, manufacturing, the battery, and what happens when the vehicle is scrapped. None of this makes the electric car a bad idea. What it does is make the answer conditional.
The lesson is a bit challenging for anyone who likes simple labels: sometimes the scope of assessment justifies a green stamp more than an actual technology.
Logistics is running the same risk right now
Every sector has its tailpipe: a metric that is real, measurable, easy to communicate, but only a slice of the picture.
In packaging and load carriers, that metric is rotations. How many trips does the unit survive? It is a legitimate question and a genuinely useful one. Working with wooden pallets, we know the unmistakable value of circularity. However, a rotation count says little about where the material came from and where it will end. But also, does the resource regenerate? Can a damaged unit be repaired? And are there other features that contribute to emission reduction?
Widen the boundary and the picture rearranges. Therefore we need to look at full lifecycle assessments (LCAs). Applying them, shows how wood is a renewable raw material sourced, in Europe, overwhelmingly from sustainably managed forests that continue to expand. How a damaged wooden pallet is repaired with a board and a nail rather than written off. How nine in ten wooden pallets are recovered rather than landfilled. How at the end of a long service life the material moves into chipboard, panels or energy recovery. And how it locks in carbon resulting in net-negative emissions. Compared to other materials, wooden units consistently carry the lower burden, and the gap widens rather than closes when you extend the comparison across a large number of trips.
Three questions worth asking before you believe any comparison
Where does the measurement begin and end? Tailpipe emissions and well to wheel do not give the same result for your car, neither do rotations and LCAs for your packaging unit.
How many impact categories does it cover? A single indicator, chosen selectively, can be made to say almost anything. Climate, water, land use, toxicity and resource depletion do not always point the same way.
What is the functional unit? Comparing one pallet to one pallet is not comparing like with like. Comparing the delivery of the same logistics service over the same period is.
Ask those three questions consistently and something useful happens. Products that quietly perform well stop being penalised for looking traditional, and products that market well stop being rewarded for a favourably drawn boundary. Our advice to everyone involved, from policymakers to supply chain managers: Don’t just measure the impact you see, measure the impact that lasts.
